“In the beginning, the universe was a cup of coffee that God had ordered in a cafe. God poured milk into its inky blackness, stirring galaxy after galaxy into existence, each one around the black center of the universe with each stir of the spoon. With sugar, God filled the universe with stars, twinkling and dissolving and splattering energy into the furthest reaches of the cup. This is how Pastor Al tried to reconcile science with religion one Saturday morning at the Men’s Breakfast. After he had explained the story, his congregants looked into their coffee with blank stares.”
